Hourglass Surreal Light Palette: First Impression/Review

I’ve never tried any other Hourglass products in my life. I’ve said before that I prefer a matte face, but I’ve recently been super into highlighting. Who hasn’t!? So when I saw this beauty, I had to pick it up. The Hourglass Surreal Light palette retails for $95 CAD. It’s super expensive. But as someone who had never tried Hourglass products, $95 to try five different products was really enticing. Their full sized powders are around $50, give or take a little bit depending on the product. Overall, the amount of product you get versus price evens out. The bonus you get with this palette is all 5 shades are limited edition!

To start off, the packaging of this palette is to DIE for! It’s not real white marble, but plastic white marble is fine by me! If you don’t like it, you can always use it as a display piece… I’m only partially kidding. It can almost fit in the palm of one hand, so for a palette it’s pretty small, however the sizes are big enough where I can still get my brush into only the product I want.

The inside is just as beautiful as the outside. The swirled colours are custom poured so each palette will be an ever so slightly different colour (for both blushes and the bronzer). The shade on the left is a finishing powder called Surreal Light. The top row are the two blushes, Surreal Glow and Surreal Effect. On the bottom, there’s a bronzer called Surreal Bronze Light and a highlighter called Surreal Strobe Light.

The finishing powder is amazing. A lot of people call Hourglass the perfect “glow from within” products, and I couldn’t agree more. For my deer Hallowe’en tutorial (found here) I used this in my under eye triangle to create an illuminated glow. This is perfect for days where you want a very subtle highlight.

Each blush is amazing as well. The one on the left is described as a “pale peony pink mixed with Surreal Light”, which is the finishing powder. The blush on the right is a “cool pink rose with soft warm peach”. Mine seems to be more on the rosy side, but I don’t mind. I don’t actually own many blushes, so it’ll be great to try these out and incorporate them in my daily routine.

I think the bronzer is absolutely stunning. It’s shimmery and beautiful. The shades offered in this palette are perfect for fair to light skin tones (yay for pale girl bronzers!)

Lastly, the highlighter included in this palette. I’m on the fence about it. When I highlight, I like intense highlight. This is not as intense as I would like, however it is a very pretty colour. I think that a second bronzer would have been nicer, but that’s just personal preference. I’m sure people who prefer a subtle glow on the cheekbones will love this.

Overall, I’m pretty impressed with this palette. Worth $95? I’m going to say yes, because it was a great way for me to try a bunch of products from a company that I was unfamiliar with. Of all the shades, I’m least likely to use the highlighter, but I’m sure I can find a use for it. Maybe on a “no makeup-makeup” day.

I can’t wait to try some more Hourglass products! What are your favourites?
